Captain Cebolla

This is a personal project I created with the intention of achieving a more illustrative look with my work. I wanted to experiment with aspects such as frame rate, forced perspective, hand-painted textures and grease pencil.

I started with a sketch of a character. This developed into thinking about where they live and their day-to-day life. I decided I wanted them to live on a houseboat littered with remnants of what they get up to; stargazing, gardening and relaxing.

This resulted in a very natural process of creating the props to populate the boat with as they already had a storytelling purpose. I also wanted each element to keep shapes iconic and simple to create a strong silhouette.

For texturing, I experimented with hand-painted patterns to add imperfection and variety to the solid colours. I accentuated details by drawing over the objects with Blender’s grease pencil tool. Some of these textures and grease pencil elements were animated using noise and displacement modifiers to imply a sense of motion such as the wind through the trees and the ocean waves.

For animation, I used a mix of 24 and 12 frames per second. For certain elements such as the boat and water, 24 fps made for more appealing smooth movement, but for other elements such as the character and props, 12 fps added charm and character. Some elements used multiple frame rates at once such as the music notes translating and scaling at 24 fps but rotating on a much lower frame rate.
