Portrait of a Regal Family
This is a personal project inspired by the slightly surreal style of portraiture found in Renaissance and Baroque art. I enjoyed the colours, texture and composition of these works along with the wrapped features and perspectives. I wanted to exaggerate these qualities to create something strange and comedic.

I was also inspired by collage artists and wanted to explore how this technique could be applied to 3D works. Most of the textures for this piece were created through heavily editing and distorting photographs of real-world objects and textures.

By including realistic elements, I wanted to emphasise the uncaninness that is common in certain Renaissance and Baroque art through the juxtaposition of detailed texture and highly stylised models.

I also created a short video documenting my process for social media.
You can see through the showcase of my greyscale models that I kept characters extremely simple and low-poly and pushed expressiveness through shape language.

As seen in the viewport of this video, there are also some elements of forced perspective. I utilised orthographic perspective in this piece to mimic the flat and odd layout of the paintings I was inspired by.
To achieve certain compositions, I had to exaggerate the scale of objects such as the background wall. I had to shrink the back wall, creating a tapered tunnel to get the look I wanted.

I particularly liked how my textures were undistorted by the forced perspective of my objects, due to the orthographic perspective. This created a somewhat disorienting effect much like my inspirations, heightening the uncanny feeling I wanted to convey.
