March of the Primitives
This was a personal project exploring the creation of characters through simple geometry and linework. I was interested in focusing on one type of shape for each character and seeing how I could convey different personalities using a limited set of shape language.
I was also interested in the relationship between character and music. Each character is tied to a specific track that reflects their personality. When all are played together, it creates a complete piece of music that drives the animation.

Here is a recording of the 3D viewport of my scene. I created custom rigs for each character that allowed for a lot of freedom and adjustments in their movement.

As you can see, I also implemented forced perspective by exaggerating the distance and scale of the parts of the character that were closer or further from the camera. This helped give character clear silhouettes and allowed me to push the graphic elements of each character

The character's limbs were created using Blender's grease pencil tool. These objects were then attached to the character rig, allowing them to be driven by the movement of the geometry.
I also used the sphere character as the art for my business card. As most of my work focuses on animation, I wanted to reflect this aspect of my work in my business card.

Each business card was printed with a unique frame of animation extracted from the sphere walk cycle. This resulted in 24 unique designs all conveying a sense of motion.

When all 24 cards are flicked through like a flipbook, or photographed one by one in a stop-motion style, the resulting animation is played, bringing the card to life.

Below are some of the still frame poses created using the rig to demonstrate how much expression can be conveyed using a combination of simple geometry, line art and flexible rigging.
